Our Workshops
Mental Roots’ main service is culturally competent workshops and creative projects for youth/students. We deliver both exclusively black group sessions/mentorship, and all-ethnicity group sessions encouraging racial/cultural understanding and unity between youth.
"The session was well planned and ran smoothly. Nathan created a safe environment that allowed the pupils to speak freely and harnessed their passion for change.
The Animation work is an excellent medium to facilitate the conversations."
Karen Lamb - Mental Health Lead at The Bemrose School, Derby, UK
Mental Roots’ workshops and projects facilitate honest discussions around cultural and societal factors affecting mental wellbeing for African/Caribbean people, as well as exploring similarities and intersections with other groups and factors (e.g. Asian heritage, gender, class, faith etc).

We run our sessions mainly for academic institutions - schools, colleges and even university classes where necessary - to equip young people from diverse backgrounds to be in better touch with their emotions, creativity and cultural roots.

By the end of the term or academic year (however long we work with a cohort of students), the aim is for students to:

-
Have higher sense of self-esteem, self-awareness and pride in their own cultural roots.
-
Be equipped with adequate knowledge and tools to improve their own mental and emotional wellbeing
-
Develop a creative outcome (e.g. performance piece, comic strip or even short video) that expresses their own mental health/identity journeys
-
Be inspired and equipped to create a more inclusive society within their communities and specialisms.
-
Meet other relevant school/PSHE criteria for mental wellbeing and DEI (diversity, equality & inclusion).
We are open to integrating our sessions into subject lessons and curriculums (especially PSHE or any relevant creative arts lessons), or even in extracurricular time slots (e.g. after school).
The ideal cohort of students to work with would be any mixture of following:
-
between ages 11 and 18
-
ESSENTIAL to have at LEAST some students from 'minority'/global majority backgrounds (African/Caribbean, Asian, mixed ethnicity)
-
any signs of struggling with mental health (e.g. high anxiety, low confidence, emotional outbursts, struggles with expression or making friends)
-
Have learning difficulties or struggles with conventional learning methods, and are more open to visual/creative ways of learning.
